Mayor Davis: $40 million for better health in Bayonne
The Big Idea:
● In 2023, Bayonne City secured $40.55 million in state and federal grants to revitalize healthcare through new funding for the city’s only hospital.
● The funding will allow the Bayonne Medical Center, which provides care for thousands of Bayonne residents, to remain open and upgrade its facilities, broaden its range of services, and recruit additional health care professionals to keep up with demand.
● The Center is now part of the nonprofit health system CarepointHealth, which also runs Hoboken University Medical Center and Christ Hospital.
Background:
The Bayonne Medical Center was founded in 1888 and has almost 300 beds.
As the hospital has faced potential closure over the past few years, Mayor Jimmy Davis worked diligently to keep the hospital open. Through their leadership in securing the recent grants, Mayor Davis and the Bayonne City Council have ensured the hospital will stay open and continue to serve its critical role as one of the city’s primary health care providers.
Fun Fact:
The Bayonne Medical Center is the city's largest employer, with over 1,200 employees.
Their Take:
“Healthcare should not be about dollars and cents, it should be about common sense and Bayonne deserves a full-service hospital that can provide the highest quality healthcare to our residents. By securing state and federal funding, not only will their presence be expanded, but it will also guarantee access to top-of-the-line care for all individuals who require and deserve it.”
